Barrier Free Flagstaff is a citizen's advocacy
group on a mission to foster community
understanding of how accessible and inclusive
spaces can be achieved for all, promoting the
principles of universal design.
Our logo was inspired by the disability pride flag, which carries the following significance for each color:
Green: Sensory disabilities (e.g., deafness, blindness, etc.)
Blue: Represents psychiatric and mental health disabilities (e.g., depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.)
White: Represents invisible and undiagnosed disabilities.
Gold (Yellow): Represents cognitive and intellectual disabilities, including neurodivergence and autism.
Red: Represents physical disabilities (e.g., mobility challenges, chronic pain, etc.)
Charcoal Gray (Background in the flag): Mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence, abuse and systemic neglect.
As we advocate for all people, inclusion of all disabilities in our logo was an important design factor. We added the sloping trees and used the colors as rays of light in a formation that mimics a sunset, or sunrise, to show the beauty of where we live and to signify a time of change.
